Sanguin Francesca , Camozzi Valentina , Mantero Franco , Luisetto Giovanni

We describe a case of severe hypocalcemia after methimazole treatment for Graves disease, which closely resembles classic hungry bone syndrome.A 41-year-old woman with a history of Graves disease presented to our Internal Medicine ward with tachyarrythmia. Laboratory data showed a severe hyperthyroidism, an ecocardigraphy demonstrated a dilated cardiomyopathy. The patient was given beta-blockers, low molecular weight heparin, and methimazole (30 mg/day)....

Persano Mariasara , Franceschet Giulio , Camozzi Valentina , Cappellari Roberta , Fadini Gian Paolo

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease associated with multi-organ complications, including poor bone quality and high risk of frailty fracture. Bone and vascular complications seemed to be connected, as diabetic patients with atherosclerotic lesions show enhanced extrascheletric calcifications which in turn are associated with increased fracture risk. The aim of this study was to assessed bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS) in diabeti...

Sanguin Francesca , Camozzi Valentina , Albiger Nora , Scaroni Carla , Mantero Franco , Luisetto Giovanni

Osteoprotegerin (OPG) has been identified as a decoy receptor that inhibits osteoclast differentiation and recently as a paracrine regulator of vascular calcification. OPG is suppressed by glucocorticoid administration. In this study, we evaluated OPG and bone metabolism in Cushing’s syndrome (CS) before and after surgical treatment. Twenty-nine patients with CS (26 women and 3 men, mean age: 40.7–2.8 years) and 27 age and sex-matched controls have been studied for b...

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the phenotype of PHPT, the adherence to International Guidelines and the rate of surgical cure of PHPT in Italy. From January 2014–January 2016, we conducted a prospective, multicenter (n=29 endocrine tertiary referral centers) study on patients with PHPT, recording clinical and biochemical data, parathyroid imaging and therapy choice at baseline and at last follow-up. The study group included 604 patients with PHPT, w...
